Gym candy begins by talking about Mike Johnson, a former professional football player, and his son Mick Johnson. Mike Johnson taught his son how to play football because he was a pro football player and he wanted his son Mick to follow in his foot steps. As Mick grows up during dinner time Mick and his dad would have several conversations about all his dads awards hanging on two of the four walls in the basement and how the other walls were for Mick’s awards. Mick’s mom didn't like how his dad put football before everything, and his mom and dad would usually argue about it. Later on in Mick’s life his dad kept him back one year so he would have an advantage over the other kids on the football team. While being on the football team Mick’s coach Mr. Knecht has been a pop warner coach for years but in the eighth grade his son, Joey Knecht quit playing, so Coach Knecht stopped being a coach. Mick then got a new coach Mr. Rooney a guy who played college football for Oregon State. Coach Rooney asked Mick if he was the kid who started kindergarten late to mess with Mick’s head. Then coach asked Mick was he Mike Johnson kid the guy who played for the Huskies, he said it was something to be ashamed of.
